Baby

After making its way to the uterus, the fertilized egg implants and divides in two, forming a blastocyst. Those two parts will then begin to form the placenta and the embryo. By the end of the month, your baby is a tiny tadpole-like being, smaller than a grain of rice. The umbilical cord has started to develop, and what will be the placenta has formed a yolk sac. This sustains the baby until the placenta develops.

Your baby already has a head with an opening that will be her mouth. Her primitive heart has begun to pump and her brain is starting to form. Arm and leg buds will be coming soon!

Mom

After taking that pregnancy test, you might be feeling a combination of extreme euphoria, disbelief, anxiety, or surprise. These are all very normal emotions. Just take it one day at a time and try not to get overwhelmed. If you received a positive result on your home pregnancy test, go ahead and make an appointment with your OB/GYN. They will take your medical history, confirm your pregnancy, discuss your symptoms, and determine the estimated date of delivery (EDD). They may or may not perform a pelvic exam at that time. Blood or urine tests may also be ordered. If you are not already taking prenatal vitamins, start now. Your doctor may give you a prescription.

Your physical symptoms may include a missed period (although you may have a slight staining due to implantation), nausea, fatigue, frequent urination, bloating, indigestion, mood swings, and breast changes (darkening of areolas, fullness, tenderness, tingling in nipple area). You may be spotting, cramping, or feel pressure in your uterus or abdominal area. This sometimes happens in early pregnancy, so don’t jump to any conclusions about possible miscarriage. Call your doctor if you have these symptoms.
