When that first child comes along, it can be difficult to get used to a whole new lifestyle. You’re not getting much sleep, and if you’re nursing, you may feel as though you are literally tied to the baby. After a few weeks of this, you may wonder when you’re going to feel like part of the outside world again.
While it may be difficult to leave your baby even for a short time, a night out with your partner or spouse is exactly what you need to feel better. But who do you trust to care for your precious baby? Well, mom, get out that breast pump, because we’re going to give you some tips in finding a little child care for some well deserved time off.
Caregiver Ideas
- Most obviously, what family members are around to help you out? If mom or mom-in-law is able, take her up on her offer to help. That’s what grandmas are for!
- Your best girlfriend may ooh and ah over your precious bundle. Find out if she’d be willing to help you out for a few hours. It might give her a chance to see what motherhood is all about.
- The teenager down the street may make you a little nervous, but how about a close neighbor with kids of their own. Chances are they remember those desperate days of new parenthood.
Preparation for your Date
- If you are nursing, you obviously cannot leave your baby without nourishment. Purchase a breast pump, even if it’s just a manual one. Practice pumping at least a week before you go out. Also, let your baby practice drinking from a bottle, maybe a bottle a day. Let dad feed him, rather than you, so he does not get confused by breast and bottle. This also promotes some bonding time with dad.
- Have the caregiver come over one day before your date. Show the caregiver your routine and let her get used to the baby for a while. Have the caregiver feed him while you are there, to ensure that you are comfortable with her style of feeding.
- On your date night, write a detailed routine up for your caregiver. Also, leave any emergency numbers (just in case).
- You may feel tempted to check in on your baby. Allow yourself one check-in call. Then, just keep your cell phone on and have the caregiver call YOU if she has any questions. Remember to put your phone on vibrate. Nobody likes a ringing phone at the movie theatre or restaurant.
Try to enjoy yourself. Go to dinner and a movie and talk about adult things. A night out once in a while will certainly not hurt your baby. In fact, it will actually help your baby by keeping you sane and bringing you closer to your partner. Have fun!
