Instructor Bio - Jessica Kelly, ITFS, S2M Certified Instructor

Jessica Kelly, a certified Sign2Me Instructor and a certified Infant Toddler Family Specialist and has been using American Sign Language since 1992. More importantly she is mom to a sweet toddler daughter (who can sign over 200 signs and speaks very well). Jessica is the owner of and instructor for Signs of Learning which has been in business since early 2005. She is also a Child Development Specialist offering developmental therapy (aka CBRS - community based rehabilitation services) in the Raleigh area.

She has her BA in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology from Loyola University in MD. While getting that degree she worked at Maryland School for the Deaf where she really learned and fell in love with American Sign Language (ASL). She also has her MA in Holistic Spirituality and worked as a Campus Minister on a college campus for a few years.

When she moved to NC in 2003 she worked as a nanny and taught the little girl with whom she worked ASL. Her parents were so impressed with their daughter's development and how much the signing reduced their daughter's (and their own) frustration that they said "You have got to teach this to other families, people need to know about how beneficial this can be." So that's when Jessica did some research into signing with hearing babies and was impressed with the results, so became a certified instructor and established Signs of Learning.

What is Jess’s class like?

Jess strives to nurture potential in an educational, language-rich, and playful atmosphere where babies and young children, as well as their parents, teachers, and caregivers learn the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). Participants will build their ASL vocabulary through interactive games, songs, demonstration, instruction and storytelling. Topics include Getting Started, Mealtime, Bathtime, Toileting and Diapers, Getting Dressed, and Bedtime, as well as your baby’s favorite things and general playtime signs. Using these signs in your daily life will help you to connect with and communicate with your child on a deeper level and will reduce frustration for both you and your child. Jess uses American Sign Language rather than made-up signs out of respect for the Deaf community and because it is a standardized language that can be used throughout life, rather than just as an infant.
